Energy for your Work DayPhoto Credit: stock.tookapic.comLife gets busy, as we know. Our schedules quickly fill with life obligations and deadlines at work. With so much to do and so little time, it is easy to neglect one important thing in your life…you! From work, to family, and day-to-day errands, life can get pretty tiring, and cause us to rush when it comes to nourishing ourselves. This happens at work too. With early mornings and late evenings, it is really easy to reach for caffeine, or snacks with high sugar content when in a rush. As much as these items are tempting, they may cause you to feel tired and groggy later in your workday. We understand how busy life can get, so we hope these tips will help you stay alert and feeling great during your work day. Maybe your workday will even feel as though it is going by quicker! Snacking and High-Caffeinated Drinks As tempting as sugary snacks or highly caffeinated drinks may be, these items can cause your energy to crash while at work. I am guilty of reaching for the sugary items and especially coffee when I feel tired, but I later regret my choice around 2pm when I start to feel sleepy, and groggy. These reoccurring crashes in the day caused me to re-think my energizing strategy at work, and hopefully these tips are helpful to you as well. First, is to choose some brain-powering snacks, such as nuts, fruit, or vegetables. These types of snacks will not only nourish your body, but will also boost your cognitive power and your energy. Also, try not to skip breakfast if you can help it. It will be difficult for you to focus when you are feeling hungry during those meetings! To make things easier, you can prepack these snacks the night before and make them easily accessible, so that it is less tempting to grab the quick energy-crashing items during your day. Another thing to keep in mind is the importance of drinking plenty of water. If you are not fully hydrated, you will likely start to feel the symptoms of grogginess and fatigue since your brain is not being refueled. Water will not only keep your body hydrated, it will also improve alertness and productivity without giving you that mid-day crash that you loathe. Overall, you’ll feel better! Moving around During the Day Workdays can feel long sometimes, and it can be tough to get up and move around often especially if you are determined to finish that project you’re working on, or if you know you have a meeting coming up or something of that sort. A great way to keep moving is to grab a coworker and go on a brisk walk during your lunch break. There is bound to be someone willing to get a breath of fresh air with you! A short brisk walk will leave you feeling refreshed and will give your mind a break, and you may even come up with some fresh ideas while you are out. These short walks will give you more sustained energized than a caffeinated drink, and will keep the circulation moving in your legs, especially if you find that you sit for long periods in the day. Walking and moving around for just ten minutes is a great alternative to caffeine, which could cause your energy to crash later. We hope these tips help you feel more energized during your workday! Give us feedback if you have some practices that you have found successful to stay energized. We love to hear what you have to say!
