Components to Consider when Designing Your Website
Websites are a dime a dozen these days. Every company seems to have a company website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc, etc, etc. Since there are so many websites out there, it is important to have a website that separates itself from the rest. Regardless of what people say or think, the way a website looks to the consumer can make or break your online presence and its success. Having a killer website can make the difference from an individual using your service or product vs. another company’s. Why is this? People, in general, are very visually stimulated, so having a design that appeals to them visually can determine how much time and how engaged they are on your company site.
So, what are the key components/ features to consider when building a successful website?
1. Color Scheme. Color is important whether you realize it or not. It is important to pick a color scheme and stick to it. Having too many colors can be distracting to the user and may discourage them from engaging on your website. A sophisticated, well thought out website typically takes color into consideration. In this article on ‘Kidnap Customers’ the author explains that both blue and green are the two most favored colors for a website. Orange came in last. Each and every one of us perceive color in a particular way, so choosing the right colors is crucial when deciding on the design of your site.
2. Usability and Utility. If your site is hard to navigate, takes too long to load, or does not provide the user with sufficient information where they want it, chances are they are going to search for another site that is easier to use. Making sure that content is where it needs to be, in an easy to find place, and ensuring that images and pages do not take too long is going to determine the failure or success of your website. People will return to your site if it is efficient and their experience was positive.
3. Layout. Having a solid layout is key. You want to make sure that your site is well balanced. Do not have too much text in one place and empty space in another. Also, use layouts that have been used before while putting your own spin on it. Consumers are comfortable using a site when they already have the intuition of how to navigate around it.
4. Design. Make sure that you have a consistent theme/design on your site. This will establish and keep the mood of your site, which reflects your company and brand. Pay attention to the details. The color of links, image clarity, page placement, etc all matters during the consumer experience. Making their visit to your site flawless and a breeze determines whether they will come back for more. Another thing to keep in mind? Less is more in a lot of cases. A busy site can get confusing and overwhelming for a lot of people. Keeping your site simple ensures efficient navigation.
5. Typography. The variations in font color and size does matter. Change up the sizes for titles and subtitles only. Make sure that all of your text is easy to read and consistent on every page.
Once you have considered the above for your website and you have a layout and in the works, test it! You want to see how people react to your website and make appropriate changes based on their feedback.
