In and Out of the Chocolate Box: Valentine's Day Marketing Ideas

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and businesses everywhere should be taking advantage of the marketing opportunities this holiday offers. Valentine’s Day may carry the illusion that it is all about love, but when push comes to shove, it is all about the dollars. Last year alone, consumers spent $18.6 Billion on the holiday. Even though most of that money was spent on heart chocolates and perishable flowers, it does not mean you can’t use this holiday as yet another way to reach your audiences.

I came across this great infographic highlighting some 2013 statistics. Take a peak, and then scroll down to read the rest of the article. :)

Now, for our Valentine's Day marketing ideas, so that you can get some action this holiday...

Celebrate the pair: Not a particularly sexy business? There are ways to market your business, so that you, too, can take advantage of V-Day. Market a pair, or perhaps give a discount when a person purchases two of your products or services. Play into the holiday, and what it represents: love between two people. It doesn’t always have to be sexy or romantic, just stick to the theme of ‘two.’

Make it romantic: Write holiday-themed content. Whether it is a blog post, newsletter, article, or social media content, make it romantic. For example, if you are a caterer, perhaps write a blog post on Simple Valentine’s Day recipes. If you are a retailer, why not give tips on the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? Search Engines are going to be looking for relevant content containing Valentine’s Day keywords, so do not miss out on this opportunity. If you do not have a service or a product that you can fit into the holiday, then perhaps feature a story about Valentine’s Day, a fun love-inspiring story that people can relate to.

Hate to Love - Love to Hate: Despite all the love in the air, you know there are people who despise Valentine’s Day. If your company is one that goes against the grain, then take this as an opportunity to tap into a different market—the anti-Valentine’s Day group.  The best part about it is that you can get feisty with your content and messaging. Don’t be afraid to speak up. There is a whole slew of people that will find your cynical take on the holiday refreshing. Try making a viral video, or promoting an anti-V Day special.

Show the Love: You may not have a business that can take advantage of holiday shoppers, but you can always show your customers the love in other simple ways. Send out an email to all of your clients thanking them for their continued business. This will keep you in their minds, and show them that you are thinking of them and that you care.

There are plenty of ways to jump on the Valentine’s Day bandwagon, whether you go all out and offer a free room at a local hotel, or just send out a Happy Valentine’s Day card to your customers. There is a lot of love to go around, so don’t be afraid to think both in and out of the chocolate box this year.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
