Control Your Inbox...Here's How

We all want control over what we read and what we don’t, right? Apparently, Google has a better idea of what should land in your inbox and what shouldn’t. I’m not sure who decided they had this say, but we are here to tell you, it’s not all that bad.

If you haven’t already noticed, Google has introduced Tabs in Gmail. There are three main tabs: Primary, Social and Promotions (with the ability to add other tabs as you see fit). The ‘Social’ tab grabs anything sent from your social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, etc. The ‘Promotions’ tab holds all of your deals, specials and marketing emails.

This is a quandary for email marketers everywhere as all of your eNewsletters end up in the promotions tab instead of the recipient’s primary inbox. Uh oh. Now, there are alerts for each tab, however they are far more subtle than the alerts coming through the primary inbox making it harder for recipients to immediately notice emails in any of the other tabs.

Some love this new Inbox, while others are not huge fans, especially email marketers. Tom Sather, Sr. Director of Email Research at Return Path, noted that open rates have declined by about .5%. BUT, before you freak out, we would like to put a positive spin on it.

Hear us out. Instead of promotional emails being mixed in with all messages, they are put aside in a separate tab where recipients can look at them when they are ready to view them. This could be beneficial for a lot of us, as users purposefully search for promotions instead of skipping through them as they cloud up their primary inbox. Chances are, if they are looking through their promotions tab, they are actively searching for deals, and guess what? Your emails will be there when they need them.

Now, if you would prefer to receive your newsletters, promotions, deals, etc, in your Primary Inbox, here is an easy way to change our Gmail settings!

Step 1: Simply click on the little “+” next to the “Promotions” tab.

Step 2: Once this page pops up, deselect the Social and Promotions options. This will revert your inbox back to how it was before all of the changes!

If you are into the tabs, but still want to receive certain marketing emails, like GreenRope’s J, to your Primary Inbox, all you have to do is:

Step 1: Drag and drop an email from the sender you want to receive emails from, into your Primary Inbox.

Step 2: An alert pops up saying, “This conversation has been moved to “Primary.” Do this for future messages from support@greenrope.com

Step 3: Click “YES”!

Take control of your Inbox and decide how you want to receive your email. Remember, GreenRope’s enewsletters, webinar invitations, and more will land in your promotions tab, so please drag us into the Primary!
